A Newspaper, now?
Welcome villagers! We introduce to you your first hot off the press community newspaper since 1931. We realize we’re bringing this new project to you at a time of seemingly unending information, so why introduce another? With multiplying digital subscriptions, emotionally driven social media flare ups, political opining into every corner of pop culture, or five news outlets that say the exact same thing about what’s happening in Victoria or Vancouver, we want to tone things down, and focus on our town. We want to embrace the limits of producing news so we’re doing it lo-fi, on paper only, and keeping it local.
Digital clutter and mindless skimming be gone — good riddance to scrolling! As an offline, print-only newspaper, we’re choosing this limitation on purpose: we hope to invite reading with intention. It won’t be a tabloid full of ads, it’s a big ole broadsheet you can snap, crease and fold just like your Dad used to, and one that looks like your grandpa read back in the day when everybody embraced the papers, even when they were on the john.
Clearly we’re in a new media era. Traditional news audience numbers are tanking, there are numerous layoffs in the industry, social media and the algorithm now have a stranglehold on what’s presented to us, and there is a general lack of trust in media. A newspaper might seem risky, this is why we don’t think so…
